Hurricane Irene from Space

NASA astronaut Ron Garan photographed the Category 2 hurricane last Monday as he looked down on Earth from a place he currently calls home, the International Space Station. Irene is headed towards the East Coast (New York and Boston areas) of the United States and has now been classified as a Category 3 hurricane packing winds of up to 125 mph.

“The National Hurricane Center noted on Aug. 22 that Irene is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 5 to 10 inches across Puerto Rico, The Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, the Southeastern Bahamas and The Turks and Caicos Islands,” NASA officials wrote in a statement. “Isolated maximum amounts of rainfall may reach up to 20 inches.”
