Quick Guide to Prints and Resolutions

Understanding aspect ratios and pixel dimensions:

The first thing you need to understand is the aspect ratio. In simple terms, it refers to the horizontal and vertical dimensions of your image. You can also use this online aspect ratio calculator.

The most common aspect ratio for prints is 1.50:1 which yields the greatest diversity for prints. It is also important to note that the smallest resolution one should use is 150 dpi. For best results, I suggest 300 dpi.

Here’s a table you can use for 1.50:1 aspect ratios:

  • 4×6           600×900            1200×1800
  • 8×12         1200×1800         2400×3600
  • 10×15       1500×2250         3000×4500
  • 12×18       1800×2700         3600×5400
  • 16×24       2400×3600         4800×7200
  • 20×30       3000×4500         6000×9000
  • 24×36       3600×5400         7200×10800

In case you were wondering why the 5×7 size is not here, it’s because this aspect ratio uses 1.40:1. So with that said, here are the values for this aspect ratio.

  • 5×7         750×1050            1500×2100

The first column shows the print size. The second shows the pixel size when using 150 dpi resolutions. The third column shows the pixel dimensions at 300 dpi. Hopefully this helps you in understanding the many different print sizes we all use.

Cheers!
