This young boy was playing in the streets of Pisac when I happened to walk by. He was quite intrigued by my camera and my backpack that he came over to me and started chatting it up. I really liked the look in his face – his wind chapped cheeks and the slight dust and dirt from playing on the unpaved streets. Knowing a little Spanish, I asked him if it would be okay if I took his photo. In return, I would give him a KitKat bar. He agreed. I took two frames. The first one was slightly blurry but to my delight, the second frame came out sharp and crisp. I dream of the day when I can travel back to the land of the Incas.

I still remember that time, etched in my memory forever, as I saw the news feed coming in “Live” from East Berlin. The triumph and jubilation of the topple of communism was electrifying. It definitely made top headline of the decade! However, few people can remember when the Wall was first built nor the first few years that led to the building of the Wall.

Time searched through their archives and brings us this very poignant display of how life was before and during the rise of the Berlin Wall. These photos by Don McCullin shows us his perspective inside the Berlin Wall. These photos were never published until today.

“It could almost have been as if I had wandered into Christopher Isherwood’s Berlin. I met up with the correspondent but we didn’t work together. In the evenings we’d meet and I’d tell him what I’d photographed. I went straight down to Friedrichstrasse and started working with my Rolleicord of course, I was sitting on the biggest story in the world. I saw the East Germans drilling the foundations and building the Wall breeze block by breeze block.”

While it might look rather tricky and hard, it’s actually quite simple. And best of all, it’s fun for everyone.

So how did I do it? What were the camera settings? Did I have a tripod? Photoshop? Yes to all of the above except the part about the tripod. The trick here is to keep the camera settings the same throughout the entire shot. So setting the camera to Manual (M) then adjusting the Aperture to f8 and ISO 200. I first bracketed the shot to see the light levels and decided to up the exposure value by +2/3 stops. This allowed me to bring out the darker areas of the scene and thus equalizing the light throughout.

With a little coaching prior to the actual shot, I told my nieces to do random poses as if they were conversing with themselves. It so happens that there were 5 chairs at the time so it made it a lot simpler for them. I didn’t have a tripod that day so I simply braced myself to keep the camera in the same plane for all 5 frames. When I got home, I simply clipped and pasted each frame together and achieved this FUN image of the girls. You should try it out someday.

Ciao!

On our way way, my niece decided she was going to have some fun with her sister’s scarf by wrapping it around her head like a turban.Seeing the opportunity for a quick shot, I asked her to look up at me and just give me her biggest smile. Here’s the result. This was taken with my most versatile portrait lens – the Canon 50mm f1.4 ( I can’t leave home without it).

The Tour de France is the queen of all grand tours. It’s an amazing feat and testament to human determination. It wasn’t oo long ago that we saw Lance Armstrong won 7 Tours de France in a row – a record that may never be broken. This years’ edition proved to be a spectacle that kept everyone in suspense until the second to the last day of the three week bike race.

With a lead of 57 seconds over second place Cadel Evans, Andy Schleck seemed to be the improbably Tour winner for 2011. However, Andy’s weakness was the time trial. in the end, he conceded more than 2:30 minutes to eventual winner Cadel Evans.

With Cadel’s win, his first, it marks Australia’s first Tour de France champion. Will Andy get stronger and win next year’s Tour? Only 11 more months before the 2012 edition of the Tour is upon us. So sit back and enjoy these images from The Big Picture. Be sure to check out the link for more images from the Tour.

Where did he do it? It’s none other than the tallest tower in North America – the CN Tower in Toronto. Apparently, an attraction atop the tower has been garnering much rave reviews from daredevils and crazy (you have to be nuts to be this high without a railing) folks alike.

Here’s what Mark had to say about the experience:

I am not afraid of heights, but at first it was hard to get to the edge, even to look over. I found that my brain would just not allow my body to trust the harness. But after about 5 minutes, I began to feel comfortable. The other journalists were braver than me, and we began to take pictures of them hanging over the edge.

It reminded me of my travels to Cambodia and how truly beautiful the country was. Cambodia will always have a special place in our (Melissa and me) hearts.

She’s barefoot, wearing her own clothes, no makeup and toting her own elegantly weathered monogrammed Alto bag. Yet Angelina Jolie looks radiant and completely in her element, reclining on a wooden boat in a verdant, lakeside landscape in Cambodia’s Siem Reap province. Jolie discovered the country in 2000 when she filmed “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,” and it sparked her humanitarian activism.

With Melissa getting the Friday before the long weekend off, I decided to do the same and we headed down to one of our most favorite places, one that means so much to us – Monterey, CA. With sunny skies in the forecast, we drove down to Monterey and visited the aquarium. To this day, a visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium does not disappoint. With literally hundreds of images taken this past weekend, here are some to share. I hope you enjoy!

The video link below is a great way to see the world through the eyes of a fashion photographer. I love the way he approaches ordinary people like you and me. For one thing, he already has the reputation of being “The Sartorialist” behind him. On the other hand, he’s not afraid to fail when asking people if he can take their photos. I love the feel of his images. The “free” notion of capturing the essence of fashion through normal folks like you and me is absolutely wonderful and captivating.

When we think of marriage proposals, the first thing that comes to our mind is “how did he propose?” We’ve heard lots of great stories about marriage proposals that are totally over the top. Did you hear of this guy that proposed while free falling on a sky diving trip with his girlfriend? Or how about the guy who took his girlfriend scuba diving only to pop the question 10 ATMs below?

Of all of them, including my own, I think this is the most unique.

Emily and I had the day off so we decided to have a movie date and watch Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. We kind of got bored with it about 3/4th of the way through and decided to watch it later. I had my MacBook Pro with me and I asked her if she wanted to see something I had been working on. I showed her the video, and when the words “Emily, will you marry me?” came up at the end I was down on one knee with the ring in hand.

(I seem to recall her answer being yes; but you’d have to ask her to confirm)

This long exposure, and the making of footage, were shot over three nights in Raleigh, North Carolina as a proposal to Emily Kern.

The words “Emily, will you marry me?” Were spelled out in light writing. The final image is made up of approximately 800 individual 10 second exposures.

Both the Time lapse and video were shot with Canon 7Ds.

This 16 megapixel also boasts a 3 inch touch screen that controls most of the cameras features and menu options. As is becoming the standard these days, this mighty point and shoot also packs with it 720p video mode recording.

The ST6500 is available in March and retails for $229. Pretty cool!

This is such an incredible story. It all starts with an “adventurer” (in his heart) by the name of Todd Bieber. During a recent “cross country skiing” exercise through New York’s Central Park, he stops for a minute to catch his breathe and looks down on the ground only to find a canister with a roll of film inside. He then makes it his new adventure to find the owners of the film. He took it to a processing lab to have developed and is now in search of the photos’ rightful owner. What a great new life adventure!

I know this might not have anything to do with photography but along the lines of “inspirations”, I present to you, the EGO Kit. It’s pure genius from an industrial design point of view. As a cyclist who used to enjoy barreling down the side of side of the mountains in Lake Tahoe, this would be more fun to ride up the mountain than the ski lift. Sure, some hardcore riders out there might say that they prefer riding all the way up and riding that sweet trail down the mountain but why bother? If the point is to “downhill” then getting up hill is fair game.

The Ego-Kits E-Powered Downhill Bike Kit is a mountable motor that’s compatible with 70% of bikes out there. So what do you think? Your new question will now be – “How high”?

If you haven’t heard of what a bucket list is, you simply need to watch that movie with Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson aptly called “The Bucket List” to get the idea. It’s the light-hearted spirit in all of us I suppose, that wants to accomplish certain things before we die or “kick the bucket”. I have my own running list for things to do or places to go before I pass on. I believe I’ve got 25 things on the list already, some of which I’ve already done.

This post looks at a different angle of our bucket list. As a photographer, what do you want to do before you’re not able to do the thing we love the most? I thought it would be easier if I posted images here, that I found on the web, of places or things I would like to photograph. You’ll notice I don’t have numbers associated with them. I don’t think it matters what sequence them come in as long as I’m able to fulfill them. So here they are, in no particular order. This list will continue to grow so come back and check in every now and then.

Complete a 365 Project:

I started a 365 project in 2007 as a creative outlet. The idea of a 365 project is to take an upload a photo a day. My goal one of these days is to finish at least one.

Borobudur, Indonesia:

I’ve visited numerous Buddhist temples before but none like this one in Indonesia. The location of this temple reminds me of the “jungle” temples of Cambodia that I recently visited.

I attended architecture school in college and Alhambra was definitely one of the places that caught my eye during our long and often “droning” lectures at Cal Poly. Once you see the images, you’re immediately drawn to the textures and the amount of detail inside and outside the buildings. The craftsmanship and execution of the tile work is simply exquisite!

Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights):

Almost all the photographers I know dream of one day capturing these amazing display of lights in the Northern hemisphere. This is definitely on the top of my list of places to visit. Hopefully someday, when I travel to Alaska, I would be fortunate enough to capture this amazing display.

A water drop collision:

The concept sounds easy enough. Let water drip and try to take a photograph of it. In reality, it’s a lot harder than you think. I’ve managed to capture some milk crowns before but nothing close to a water drop collision. I have the equipment to do it. It’s just a matter of patience and timing. My successful milk crown shot took over a couple of hours to create and well over 400 images. It’s a one in a million shot.

The Colosseum in Rome, Italy:

Who hasn’t seen Gladiator? When you think of Rome, you think of the colosseum. The Colosseum is probably the most impressive building of the Roman empire. Originally set as an amphitheater, it was the largest building of the era. The monumental structure has fallen into ruins, but even today it is an imposing and beautiful sight.

The Great Wall of China:

Who wouldn’t want to see “the mightiest work of man, the only one that would be visible to the human eye from the moon”? I can only imagine how impressive this structure truly is.

Pyramids at Giza, Egypt:

I’ve always been a fan of Egyptology and a visit to Egypt someday would definitely be a treat!

The Louvre, Paris, France

Kingdom of Bhutan:

A couple of years ago, my uncle asked me if I would be willing to travel to the Kingdom of Bhutan. So what do you think my response was? of course it was a resounding “YES!”. What’s incredibly appealing about this magical place is the fact that entry into the country is controlled by the government. I believe only a certain number of tourists per year are allowed to enter. In addition to this, each tourist must also spend a certain amount during their stay per day. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a country where there was such a mandate such as this.

Banaue Rice Terraces, Philippines:

This is one of the Philippines’ most prized heritage sites. The aboriginal people, the Ifugaos, maintain these terraces for their main source of income, rice. My relatives tell me it’s an 8-hour drive to this place from the capital city of Metro Manila.

Athens, Greece:

Rio de Janero, Brazil:

The Christ the Redeemer statue is often referred to as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World and rightfully so. It is one of the largest art deco statues in the world and is located atop Corcovado.

Antelope Canyon, Arizona:

The sights and scenery here are simply spectacular. This shot here is by far the most famous of all at Antelope Canyon. It’s definitely a place to go specially since Arizona is only a few hours away.

Holi Festival, India:

The array of colors is what attracts me to experience this festival myself. I’m not as familiar with this Indian tradition but according to my friends, it’s a crazy event to experience. I’ll make a note to prepare the camera for this situation as all that dust is extremely detrimental to my equipment.

Get published in a photography magazine:

This has always been a dream of mine ever since I started in photography. It doesn’t matter what size of an image gets printed as long as it’s my work and my name is written in the credits. I suppose all photographers aspire to be published in a magazine or book that pertains to photography. The dream of mine reminds me of my paternal grandmother. It had been a life long dream of hers to be published on Reader’s Digest. On her 89th birthday, she received the great news that Reader’s Digest Asia accepted her work and she was published. A dream come true indeed. One day I might just make it. We’ll see.

If you enjoyed this post, feel free to share it with your friends. I encourage you to write down your own photography bucket lists. It could be as simple as one thing or as complex as you want. I’d love to hear what makes you “tick”. Thanks for stopping by!

I was going through my favorite blog resources today and came across a blog that had an article about the "not so obvious things in my bag". I thought it was quite funny and interesting that I decided to see what I usually pack in my bag aside from the usual gear. So I suppose the next question is - which bag? If you ask my wife, she'll tell you I have as many camera bags as she has purses. Depending on how much I carry for a shoot, I can go as small as my AW200 Slingbag or as robust as my Pelican 1620 roller case. Either way, there are the "usual" things I pack from one shoot to the next. So what are they?

I thought it was quite funny and interesting that I decided to see what I usually pack in my bag aside from the usual gear. So I suppose the next question is – which bag? If you ask my wife, she’ll tell you I have as many camera bags as she has purses. Depending on how much I carry for a shoot, I can go as small as my AW200 Slingbag or as robust as my Pelican 1620 roller case. Either way, there are the “usual” things I pack from one shoot to the next. So what are they?

1. Two (1) gallon Zip-Lock bags: Why? I use it in combination with silica gel desiccants in case my camera gets wet due to water or condensation. I pack at least two bags so there’s one for each the camera body and lens. It’s come in handy on numerous occasions. They also come in very handy if you ever need to keep something in them. Zip-Lock bags are so useful in so many ways.

2. Desiccants: You never know when you’ll need these little guys. I tend to have them in all my bags anyway. Silica gel will help prevent condensation from forming inside cases. Condensation will form in a case when you take it from a warm to cooler environment. When I have multi-compartment bags, I usually have a small packet of silica gels in each compartment. I tend to buy them in bulk – eBay is a great resource.

3. A hand towel: Just in case my gear gets wet, I have something quick and absorbent to wipe it down then they immediately go inside the gallon bags.

4. Altoids: You can never be too cautious. Minty breath is always a plus! Right, girls?

5. LED keychain flashlight: Whether in I’m caught in the dark or just simply needing an accent light for a subject (i.e. rings or small objects I would like to artistically light).

6. Baby wipes: Don’t laugh. I carry around Huggies or similar wipes in my pack. I always like to wipe my hands clean. Maybe it’s simply the OC in me but they come in very handy. You’ll thank me when you’re caught in locations where the restroom facilities aren’t quite up to par with what you expect or perhaps when it it’s extremely hot and you simply would like to freshen up. Just pull a few out of the pack, place them in front of your car’s airconditioner and instant cold towelette. It’s sweet! We carried a pack of baby wipes while traveling in Cambodia in almost 100% humidity. It came in very handy.

7. Hand sanitizer: One can never be too careful.

8. Tylenol, Rolaids, and other medication: The last thing I would want to be in is at a location where I don’t have easy access to these things. So to prepare, I simply pack a few pills and put them in a small Zip-Lock bag. it’s saved me on numerous occasions.

9. Extra pair of contact lenses: I only started carrying this for a couple of years. What finally made me decide to bring an extra pair was after I had a session at Baker Beach in San Francisco. If you’ve never been there, then you won’t understand how windy it can get. Needless to say, I had to drive home with one eye shut. I was not a happy camper.

10. Mr. Pickles: See that little green guy in my Case logic pack? Yeah he’s like a little traveling gnome. We call him Mr. P. He’s pretty cool. He’s probably been to more places than you and I combined. He goes with me everywhere unless I’m not having a session then he gets to travel with my friends. He’s been everywhere from the Swiss Alps to the bottom of the ocean scuba diving. Go ahead. Check out his page and be his friend. Who knows, he might find himself in your bag someday.

While all of these might seem a bit trivial, you’ll never really know when they might come in handy. Maybe it’s me being OC once again but I’d rather be prepared than be sorry. So what’s in your bag?

Cheers!

PS: The owner of Kodak (George Eastman) named his company after the sound the he thought the camera shutter made.

I first met Joey Lawrence back in 2005 when I was a member at one of the premiere photography websites. I remember back then he was toting a 1.3 megapixel camera and he created images like no other. He was simply pure genius. Back then he told us he was an aspiring filmmaker and photographer and we believed him.

He was 15.

Joey is now a very successful filmmaker and photographer.

This is a story from not long ago
about a boy and a girl who fell in love like whoa
but there was a problem I didn’t count on
the fact I was a Canon and she was a Nikon

The photo community was too far gone
they couldn’t appreciate what we had goin’ on
we had similar features, made similar pictures
we really weren’t that different but they still couldn’t see

I auto focused on her sexy body
buttons to push didn’t know where to get started
I never thought I’d fall for a D200
but she was so hot, she was all that I wanted

[Chorus]
My 1DS mark III
felt more complete
when we were together she said my shots were so unique

But soon you’ll see
we could never be
like Romeo and Juliette
our families disagreed

Ohh Ahh Polish my lens girl
oooahh polish my lens girl
ohh-ahh polish my lens girl
don’t leave a thumb print on that lense girl

The two sides always at war
all across the message boards
Dpchallenge what the fuck yo
they could never let go
of the hate no thats for ‘sho
the Nikon gang whooped my ass and made me go

The 70-200 in my pants wouldnt fit inside her Nikon body
made me wear a UV-filter, which I’m against, but shes my shawtay
Mount her on my tripod and screw her on and off and on again
make her take my picture and say I’m the best thats ever been

[Chorus]

Cause I’m a Canon gangsta and your a Nikon shawtay
I wanna take a picture of that rockin bootay

We couldnt keep the act up we just had to face the facts
but hey look on the bright side at least we’re not a Pentax

June is a month that I always look forward to for the past 15 years. Since 1996, I’ve participated in the Youth In Arts Italian Street Painting Festival held in the second weekend in June. The festival in San Rafael is known as the largest of all street painting festivals in the United States. With more than 600 artists participating, Madonnari, or street painters, transform the streets using pastels on pavement to create more than 200 vibrant and colorful, large scale images. This feast for the eyes is complimented by entertainment on two stages and a wide variety of Italian fare.

The Italian Street Painting Festival presented by Youth in Arts attracts more than 60,000 people to San Rafael from the Bay Area and all over the world every year in June. This year’s theme, Bella Terra, celebrates the beauty of our earth through art, music and cuisine. The event takes place on June 12 and 13 from 10am – 5pm.

The gallery you see here is a small collection of images I’ve gathered over the years. Unfortunately, I don’t have anything scanned pre-2001 although I have some images from when I first started in 1996. I’m sure you can pick out which ones those are. As soon as I scan them, I’ll add them to this gallery. It’s an amazing event that I am proud to be part of year after year. What started out with two people has now grown to be a bigger group of enthusiastic folks from our office. This event, unlike others, isn’t a competition which comes as a real blessing. We don’t get paid to do this. Our time and efforts are donated – just two days out of the year, and it benefits the arts programs in the North Bay.

I’m very grateful for the enthusiasm that my friends from Gensler show during this event. It’s a chance for us to relax and have fun, far away from the pressures at work. While it is hard work, as we’re on our hands and knees the entire weekend, it’s very fulfilling knowing that our efforts have helped a charitable group such as Youth in Arts.

I hope you enjoy the photos. More will be coming soon. I’m planning of creating a treat for everyone so make sure to stay tuned and keep coming back to check out the latest updates. You can also follow me on Twitter and Facebook for the latest photos and tweets during the event. Last year, thanks to Facebook, I met friends whom I haven’t seen in a long time all because of my daily status updates on Facebook.

I hope you enjoy the images I’ve included here and please let me know what you think. If you think the photos are impressive, you should see it in real life. They are AMAZING! There is so much talent at this event! We’re still deciding on a piece (not unusual as we’re usually pretty busy at work this time of the year). Do you have one you can suggest? I’d love to hear your ideas. Ciao!

Alas, we found a piece that we will recreate this coming weekend. The image is called “The Prodigal Son” by artist Brian Despain. To find out more about Brian, click here.
