techniques to developing photographic proficiency

There is clearly one distinguishing factor that makes one heads above all and that is the power of observation. The idea is simple. Study something so mediocre that only by observing it closely, by looking closely at its’ facets and lines, that one realizes the possibilities of an image. Developing the keen sense of observation takes patience and effort. I’ve always believed that the best images are ones that are composed of the most simplest of ideas.

So how can one develop the necessary skill sets to be as observant as possible? It is through scrutiny that one sees beyond the mundane. Here’s an exercise you can try:

Pick an object. Now examine this object thoroughly. Look at the lines it creates. The shadows and reflections cast by its surroundings. Carefully study this object for roughly 15 minutes. Ask yourself the question “what are the possibilities”? What if I take a shot of this object from one view and compare it with another.

Click. Take about 30 minutes to photograph the object. Use different vantage points. Use different lighting. How does the lighting change the look of the subject? Does it look more interesting than the previous shot? Why? What makes it different? Why does a change of angles affect the feel one might have for the image? Is it more successful than the previous shot?

Remember that photography is all about telling a story. Go beyond the mundane and get out of the box. Your stories will be told in a much richer way if you don’t limit yourself to what you already know.
